That is a huge step in the right direction. Note that the article was written in early 2009. There have been a lot of breakthroughs even since then.

The internet is helping doctors from all parts of the world communicate and share groundbreaking discoveries faster than ever before. Some of the smartest and most noble doctors are entering the field and helping to improve the survival rates by the minute. Drug companies are spending billions on research to produce new medicines. People are finally starting to understand the role holistic medicine can play in curing disease. There has been an attitude shift from total witchcraft to practical mind/body medicine. Information gets better by the day. 3 months from now could look quite different than it does today. You won’t find this information in your local paper or from even your local doctor. But if you research what is really going on in the cutting edge field of cancer research, you’ll be happy to discover what is happening.

There is no use paying attention to the survival rate cancer statistics for several reasons. (I have great respect for the medical community, but don’t forget, they aren’t experts in the field of statistics. Real Stats PhDs have proven that the majority of doctors fail a pop medical stats quiz. If you are interested in this, read a book called “Fooled by Randomness” by Dr. Taleb

Here are common sense reasons why you want to take these survival stats with a grain of salt.

1. These numbers are based on the past. Being diagnosed with cancer today gives you a much better chance of survival than being diagnosed 5 years ago. The stats don’t reflect that because they can’t. How could they take the future into account?

2. The stats include people who die from other causes. For example, if a 92 year old man gets prostate cancer, he has a high chance of not seeing his 100′th birthday no matter what. Cancer affects the old more than the young. If someone dies from an entirely different illness, they are often included in the stats to make the appear artificially grim.

3. A really grim diagnoses can actually help fuel the stats. It’s very emotionally taxing on the body to have a trusted Dr. tell you that you will almost certainly be dead in 3 to 6 months. That kind of news can shock a person and literally “scare them to death”.

4. People with a certain type and stage of cancer are all lumped into one category. The stats don’t reflect the people who take matters into their own hands, get access to the best opinions and research, and do everything right to improve their chances of survival.

If you want to see a great success story about how to beat cancer, read Lance Armstrong’s book, “It’s not about the bike“. If you don’t already know him, he is an American world famous cyclist who was diagnosed with late stage testicular cancer. Many doctors thought he would die. He fought it, won a tough battle, and then not only recovered, but got back to cycling and actually won the Tour De France, the world’s toughest bike race post cancer! It is an amazing and true story. Some people call it a miracle, but to me, this is not a game of rolling the dice. You can increase your odds if you take action.

We may see cancer totally defeated and we may see it reduced to a chronic disease like heart disease or diabetes. Many cancer experts already believe it’s realistic to at least expect to live in co-existence with cancer. You may just have to take care of yourself or take the right medicine to keep it at bay. We might even see something much better soon. Cancer funding is going through the roof and the baby boom generation could very well save the day. This doesn’t have to be a death sentence if you don’t want it to. Malaria kills millions of people who don’t get the right treatment. In the relatively recent past before penicillin, many diseases used to baffle doctors and kill millions. World Epidemics

Generally, when a disease affects enough people in the rich world, we come up with a way to solve the problem. We are the richest and smartest we’ve ever been in history. Try not to be affected by all the doom and gloom. There are a lot of real reasons to be very hopeful and optimistic. People in worse conditions than you or your loved one have found a way to beat the disease. Stay strong and get informed. Your life is in your hands.
